Day 8, REST DAY, Wednesday, September 01, 2010

North Myrtle Beach, South Carolinia

No need to get up early today. I got up at 7:00. This is a rest day, a day built into the schedule for us to take a day off from cycling and do just that or do something different. It is especially nice to have a day off in a place like North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

As you can see from my pics, this Best Western hotel is on the ocean and our room has a balcony that faces the ocean. I took a short walk on the beach to capture some beautiful sunrise photos. I met up with Carl, Ken, Steve and Kathi for the continental breakfast.

I've just been hanging out today and gathering strength for tomorrow which is a 96 mile ride to Georgetown, SC. Late morning I was sitting out on our balcony watching people frolicking in the surf. Earlier this morning the swells were about 2 feet and by late afternoon they had grown to 5 feet and the wind was blowing 15 - 20 mph. There were many fewer people out there with the bigger waves. I think we are seeing the effects of hurricane Earl. It is headed directly toward SC but still is projected to curve sharply to the north and go straight up the east coast grazing North Carolina’s outer banks and perhaps going right over Cape Cod.

My roommate and I went to dinner at an Irish Pub, cheeseburgers and fries. Tomorrow is a 96 mile ride to Georgetown. The forecast here in North Myrtle Beach calls for sunny skies and 50% chance of showers late in the afternoon. We should be in Georgetown by then so maybe we won't get any rain at all.
