Day 5, 60 miles, Saturday May 30, 2009
Staunton to Lexington
(my odometer: 61 miles, 13.2 avg. mph, 4hr 34min56 sec)
Max speed: 37.6 mph
Up at 6:00, 7:00 load luggage, 7:30 breakfast at Kathy's Restaurant, 8:00 on the road. The arrangement for breakfast today was a little different. Kathy's is about one mile down the road (on our route) so after we did our load, we rode our bikes there and when finished, continued on from there for this days ride. The temperature at 6:30 was 59F and the forecast was that it would rise to the high 70's by early afternoon and that's exactly what happened. It was mostly sunny all day and not too hot. There were many hills, some short some long, some with grades as much as 14%. They (of course) were followed by downhills. The downhills were great but you have to earn them and we sure did. There were some great scenic views today and what I thought were llamas were alpacas.
I continued to experience pain today in my right shoulder but got some treatment for it tonight (more on that topic tomorrow). Tomorrow is a "loop" day and Paul and I will be doing the short ride of 49 miles.
