Day 10, September 18, 2007

Crescent City, CA to Garberville, CA
83.1 miles, 13 mph, 6h 20m 12s

Up at 5:45, 6:30 breakfast at Denny's, 7:30 load luggage, 7:40 on the road. The TV forecast this was for 48F at 7 AM, mostly cloudy, 20% chance of a shower during the morning and sunny by mid day. Well, it was full sun all day.

My first pic was the yard of the Pacific Lumber Company. I thought that it was interesting to see the raw trees in back and the finished product in front.

That we had a sunny day was so good, because our route today was to go down the "Avenue of the Giants". This was a 20 mile stretch of road through the National Redwood Forest. Oh Boy! what an awesome experience! Many of these trees are over 1,500 years old. It makes you feel like you are in a prehistoric forest and dinosaurs will appear at any moment. We saw several that had fallen down and the root system was very small for such a huge, old tree. I tried to take pictures that would show the trees from different perspectives. Some are head on with sunlight showing through and others are looking straight up. The straight up ones are difficult for you to focus your mind in order to understand what it is you are seeing. When I began to write this journal, I realized that it would be hard for people looking at the tree photos to comprehend their huge size because only a few have people in them. The picture in yesterday's journal of me at the "Big Tree" is a good example to show the Redwood's size.

I also had to take a few scenic river pics. The second SAG was at the town of Myers Flat next to a "Drive Through Tree". So, naturally I had to check it out. I was on my bike but I think the car would have to be a Volkswagen or a Cooper. However, that tree was very large. I arrived at our hotel at 4:35, a very long day for me. Rap was at 4:45 so thus I was a little late. Dinner was at Sicilito's, an Italian and Mexican Restaurant next to our hotel. Then, back to my room to finish today's journal and send it to Ed. Tomorrows ride is 68 miles to Ft. Bragg, CA. We will be riding through portions of the National Redwood Forest for the next 2 days. Off to bed 11:30.
