REST DAY Crescent City

No alarm today. My roommate and I both woke up at 7:15 and went to the hotel continental breakfast at 8:00. I had several things I had to do and some things I wanted to do and I accomplished all and more. The first was to wash my clothes. The second was to clean and lube my bike.

Our hotel is beside a series of docks and a small marina. We have been hearing sea lions honking up a storm almost non stop since we got here. I wanted to check them out. I recall seeing a story on TV several months ago about a group of sea lions in California , taking over a marina dock, and they wouldn.t leave. Maybe this was the place. So I went for a leisurely bike ride to check it out. It wasn't, but a group of about 15 has taken up residence on a floating platform 100 ft off shore next to a marina dock. There was a small group of about 10 harbor seals there also. I then went back to retrace our route into Crescent City as it had many great photo opportunities but it was overcast yesterday. At 7 this morning it was full sun, but as the day progressed it gradually became mostly cloudy. But there was enough sun for me to get some nice ocean shots.

Along the way Vivian found a new friend. At one place I was kneeling down to take a photo and a small squirrel walked up very close to me. I think he thought I would feed him. I put my hand down, had my camera ready and took his picture. A man sitting nearby said the squirrel kissed my finger. I know I shouldn't have, but my adventurous spirit told me "go for it." There were several sea gulls around and they also were looking for a handout. I think the pic I took was gorgeous - what a beautiful bird.

I continued on, thoroughly enjoying my Rest Day adventure, looking for more interesting encounters. At another viewpoint I observed people laying down on the beach, digging holes in the sand. I thought this quite odd, and obviously wondered what they were doing, so I walked down and asked them. A lady told me she was looking for Agates, a transparent stone that can be yellowish, blue or white. They don't have very much of a monetary value, but they are pretty and people like to find them. Well, guess what I did. I sat down on the beach, she told me how and what to look for and I spent the next hour and a half digging for Agates. I found a few and some other pretty rocks to add to my collection. At 3:30 I headed back to the hotel, took in a flat tire clinic done by Mike, had a Subway for dinner and then up to my room to finish my journals and send them to Ed.
