Day 14, Saturday, June 19, 2005

Price, UT to Green River, UT
(1,160 feet of climbing) - 66.5 miles, 13.7 mph, 4hr 50min 30sec

Up at 5:15, 6:00 continental breakfast at hotel, 7:00 load luggage, 7:15 on the road.

Weather prediction is for sunny skies, headwinds and temperatures in the high 80's. This was a short riding day and everyone rode a bit faster then usual so we could get to the hotel for a 3 PM ABB shuttle (45 min) to Arches National Park in Utah. The pictures speak volumes - just an awesome place to visit. I could easily spend days here doing photography. I'd probably get lost. The place we visited was called 'the windows' because of so many arch 'holes'. Some of the rock is mud stone and erodes more quickly and as a result some inspiring, odd looking structures are formed. This park is very popular tourist attraction.

Water and ice, extreme temperatures, and underground salt movement are responsible for the sculptured rock scenery of Arches National Park. On clear days with blue skies, it is hard to imagine such violent forces, or the 100 million years of erosion, that created this land that boasts the greatest density of natural arches in the world. More than 2,000 cataloged arches range from a three-foot opening, the minimum considered to be an arch, to the longest one, Landscape Arch, which measures 306 feet from base to base.

We had one hour so only could go to the 'Windows' location. This side trip took 3 hours out of my afternoon but it was sooooo worth it. However, I now need to find the time to get caught up with my journals. I have several factors that contribute to my time problem. I hand write my journals, edit as I go, on a steno pad. Then I word process my journal on my laptop, editing again. Then I send the journal in an email to Ed, my stepson with attached pics. This requires a fast speed internet connection and not all hotels have one and the ones that do are all different. I very often run into problems connecting and that's where my hero Bill Berendsen comes to my rescue and fixes it for me.
