Day 13, Friday, June 17, 2005
Salt Lake City, UT to Provo, UT
(1,740 feet of climbing) 68 miles, 11.5 mph, 5hr 53 min 15 sec
Up at 5:15, 6:00 continental breakfast at Comfort Inn - excellent again: scrambled eggs, hash browns, make your own waffles, juice and coffee, 7:00 load luggage, 7:15 on the road.
Weather forecast today was for clear, mostly sunny and 20 - 25 mph winds from the south. Our route is southeast so that means headwinds. We passed through rural housing and urban areas so there was some protection from the wind but it was a tough day. It was good that the ride was only 64 miles. Even though the day seemed quite flat, we did have 1,740 feet of climbing.
Only 1 SAG today - at a church parking lot 28 miles out. These SAG stops are always a welcome and necessary part of the daily rides. SAG's give us a chance to refill our bottles and eat energy snack foods. It is also a chance to get off our bikes, stretch our legs and relieve the pressure on our rear ends. Yes, our backsides do get sore! Four to seven hours on a bicycle seat is stressful. The degree of discomfort is related to preparation and training before the ride and having a bike that is 'fitted' to our body. There are also cycling riding techniques that if practiced, make the daily cycling challenge more enjoyable.
Today we continued to see the rugged beauty of many of the West and so many snow capped mountains. I really enjoy photographing our beautiful country. I hope that all of you that follow my journey on this website enjoy it too.
Our route went through Brigham Young University campus. I took some photos there to show the setting of this University. (see pics)
We had dinner at the 'Sizzler'. I had a huge salad from the salad bar, steak, baked potato, 2 bowls of clam chowder, 2 large Pepsi and a big dish of ice cream. After dinner I called Donna on my cell phone from the hotel parking lot. (see pic) Check out that background!
