Day 7, June 11, 2005
Lovelock, NV to Winnemucca, NV - 74.4 miles, 14.9 mph, 4hr 58min 39sec
Up at 5:45, 6:30 breakfast at Casino Restaurant, 7:30 load luggage, 7:45 on the road.
It rained very hard last night but it was clear, with some puddles and a cool 44F this morning. It is expected to warm up to 65F by mid morning.
Note: It is very difficult sometimes to choose the correct cycling clothes to wear and other clothes or items to bring with us on the bike. This was quite difficult back in the Sierra's. It should be easier now as the weather is more predictable here in the Nevada high plains. We must make good choices because after we load luggage, we can't access it until we get to the next hotel.
Today's ride was great, warm and partly cloudy. We rode for 9 miles on the Old Victory Highway (almost no traffic) and also were on I-80 again twice for a total of 34 miles there. We saw thousands of Mormon Crickets and it was an obstacle course to avoid running over them (see pic). Right now they are babies, 1 inch long and fat. When they are full grown they are 2 inches long and have a 3 inch tail that sticks up behind them and they are carnivores. They eat each other and have been known to eat people also. i.e. If a person were out hiking and fell and became unconscious, the crickets would eat them. Ugh!
SAG 2 today was a truck stop that had a convience store, Taco Bell, Subway and slot machines. Slot machines are everywhere. I had lunch at Subway.
Again, today I took a lot of photos. There are "Kodak moments" everywhere. The beauty out here is just incredible. I view an awesome scene or structure, ride a short distance down the road and see another. It just happens continuously all during the day. I don't "like" being away from home but I love seeing the beauty of our country.
I arrived at our hotel 'Value Inn' at 2 PM, checked in, had a shower and worked on my journal. This hotel has no high speed connection at all. It is a good thing that I maintain my AOL dial up account, just in case this situation occurs on my ride. I'll send today's journal to Ed via dial up and the 36 pics when I can access a high speed connection, hopefully tomorrow at our hotel in Battle Mountain.
