Southeastern CT Foliage Tour 2012
Gales Ferry, Groton, Mystic, Stonington

Up at 7:00 a.m., 51 mile ride today. Very cold 34F outside. Big breakfast today: juice, fried eggs, hash browns, toast, coffee. The ride started at my home today, and nobody showed up to join me at 9:00 (38F). I wasn’t surprised, as it was unseasonably cold. I was hopeful that it would warm up a lot, so I delayed my departure until 11:30, but it was still only 46F. However, I dressed in many layers and started out.

Today’s ride was to be the longest ride of my five-day adventure, and it was sunny all day. The route today included many of the scenic treasures here in Groton that many local residents (including me) just take for granted. Some of the treasures are:

Nautilus Submarine Memorial, Gold Star Bridge, WW II Submarine Memorial, New London Harbor, Electric Boat, Pfizer’s, house on stilts, Eastern Point Beach, University of CT Avery Point campus, Shennecossett Yacht Club marina, Project Oceanology boats and Groton Airport.

At 25 miles out I stopped at my cycle shop (Mystic Cycle) to warm up for a while, and then continued on. The temperature hadn’t changed, and I was very uncomfortable, so I cut my ride short by five miles. When I got home, the temperature was still only 48F.

It was a tough, cold cycling day.
