Day 10, Tuesday, June 14, 2005

Elko, NV to Wendover, NV (3,690 feet of climbing today)
107 miles, 14.8 mph, 7hr 12 min 54sec

Up at 5:15, 6:00 breakfast at hotel/Casino restaurant, 7:00 load luggage. 7:15 on the road.

The weather prediction this morning was for another great cycling day and it 'kinda' was. First of all, last night I sent Ed 3 days of journals and pics, but I goofed and sent some of the same ones twice. He emailed me last night late to inform me. It was too late to fix so I re-sent it this morning as I had a 10 minute window of time. It took me 30 minutes as I kept doing something wrong, but I did (I think) finally do it right. Good thing I did, cause tonight's hotel in Wendover NV has no high speed connection at all. I was very late getting on the road which made my 107 mile ride today very difficult- starting late, trying to ride faster to catch up, no one to talk to and share decisions with, getting nervous . . . .

At 7 miles out we got on RT 80 again and rode it all the way to Wendover. I stopped at 48 miles to have lunch at a Burger King. After lunch Dale, Doug and I came upon George and helped him change a flat tire.

We then continued on with a small head wind but it got stronger. After climbing Mt. Pequop we had a nice long downhill into a valley. There were small rain squalls moving through the valley. I fed a pretzel Vivian at SAG 2, snacked on some energy food, filled my water bottles and continued on. I got caught in a squall but it didn't last very long. The squalls increased in frequency over the next 30 miles and then formed a large thunder storm that appeasred to be following me. I tried to ride faster against the head wind but it was tiring. Unfortunately there were several cyclists behind me that got caught in it. But, I got in to Wendover and our hotel at 5PM, before it reached me. Actually, it didn't hit Wendover until at night.

I had a quick shower and went to RAP and then a complimentary buffet in the Casino. It was very nice!

Today was a tough day (107 miles) and I spent a long time in the saddle (7 hrs 12 min 54 sec). Tomorrow we have another long day (117 miles to Salt Lake City). Also, we go on mountain time tomorrow so lose an hour. The day after tomorrow will be a rest day and I'll get caught up on journals, laundry, bike clean and other stuff. I thought I might go for a swim in Salt Lake, we'll see.
